Neck Injuries

Representation for Auto Accident Victims in Northern Virginia

Neck injuries are common injuries associated with automobile accidents, especially rear-end collisions. Often we hear the term "whiplash," which is a non-medical expression used to describe cervical acceleration-deceleration (CAD) injuries. Although this type of injury is common, it can lead to serious and long-lasting medical complications. If you suffered a cervical acceleration-deceleration injury (whiplash) in an avoidable accident, the Northern Virginia accident attorneys at Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata, & Siegel, P.C. can help you recover damages for your injury.

What is a "CAD" injury?

CAD (or whiplash) occurs when the bones, muscles, and nerves in the neck are suddenly strained. In a motor vehicle accident, this usually happens when a vehicle is struck from behind. At the time of impact, the force from the approaching car will suddenly throw the passenger's neck forward and back. This retraction, extension, and rebound will strain the neck, causing damage to the muscles.

What are the symptoms of "CAD" or "Whiplash"?

The symptoms associated with a CAD injury – called "whiplash associated disorders" or "WAD" for severe injuries – can range from mild discomfort to serious nerve and tissue damage. Some of the most commons symptoms of CAS or whiplash are:

  • Pain in the neck
  • Shoulder pain (referred pain)
  • Headaches
  • Stiffness in the neck
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness in the arm
  • Pain in the jaw
  • Visual disturbances
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

Severe neck injuries can lead to additional complications, including depression, anxiety, anger, social withdrawal, and post-traumatic stress syndrome. These are serious medical conditions and may require extensive hospitalization and treatment, which can lead to lost wages and costly medical bills.
