  • Watergate Garage Collapses, Causes Injuries

Earlier this month, two victims were injured and several businesses were displaced after a parking garage at the Watergate hotel collapsed. The incident put a halt on construction work being performed as part of a $125 million hotel renovation project.

According to officials, the incident took place shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Friday May 1st. Here are a few details about what is known so far:

    • The incident took place shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Friday May 1st. Officials have stated that a 75 by 100 foot section of the Watergate parking structure collapsed. Roughly a third of the 100 vehicles in the garage were damaged or destroyed.
    • Two victims injured were construction workers. Nearly 250 construction workers have been on site during the renovation project.
    • Safety officials and engineers have been evaluating the incident and the parking structure. Construction was halted while workers made efforts to stabilize the structure. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
    • The incident has led to multiple business closures, a lack of hot water and other services for nearby residents, and several road closures.

The collapse, while burdensome for local residents and businesses, fortunately did not injure as many victims or workers as it could potentially have. While officials continue their investigations, the incident can help serve as a reminder of the serious risks present on construction sites, especially when they are in locations used or nearby the public.

Construction companies and workers are required by premises liability laws to ensure that sites are safe - not only for workers, but also for nearby businesses, residents, and any passerby. When they fail to make safety a priority, the consequences can be tragic and far-reaching.
