On May 6, 2015, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance performed a surprise brake inspection of vehicles in 22 states and 10 Canadian provinces. The CVSA is an alliance of governmental agencies and officials and private groups and companies whose focus is on promoting and effecting commercial motor vehicle safety and security. The multi-state inspection that occurred in May was part of Operation Airbrake, a comprehensive campaign designed to educate drivers and technicians on brake safety and encourage and enforce compliance with safety regulations. In the May operation, 6,337 commercial vehicles were inspected for brake failure and faults. Of those vehicles, 14.2% were placed out of service for brake violations. This was a drop from 15.2% in 2014.Northern Virginia Truck Accident Lawyer

Of the vehicles that were ordered out of service, 9% were ordered out of service for being out of adjustment, while another 7.7% were placed out of service for brake component violations, such as cracked or missing components, air leaks, or damaged brake hoses or tubing, drums, rotors, etc. However, in Virginia 17.1% of the vehicles inspected were ordered out of service for having brakes out of adjustment, and 9.2% were out of service because of brake component failures. A total 18.9% of all commercial vehicles inspected in Virginia were ordered out of service for brake problems.

Although the overall numbers are an improvement over last year, this unannounced inspection is an unfortunate reminder that many commercial vehicles on the road are not as safe as they should be. These unsafe commercial trucks pose a danger to everyone on the road – all it takes is one truck with faulty brakes to cause a catastrophic accident.
