  • New Car Technology May Keep Us Safe, But Won't Necessarily Save You Money

Even as technology plays a larger role in reducing the chances of auto accidents, drivers likely will not see a cost savings in the near future. At a recent auto safety symposium in Windsor, Connecticut, auto and insurance experts stated they do not expect new safety technology in cars to reduce insurance rates any time soon. This technology includes such features as cameras, radar, automatic braking, and driver alert systems. These technologies are becoming increasingly common as more and more auto manufacturers install the features as they realize the benefits of the technology. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, one in three fatal auto crashes, and one in five accidents with injuries would be prevented if all passenger vehicles were equipped with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind spot detection and other safety features.auto safety technology

Despite these benefits, insurance rates are not likely to decrease immediately for a number of reasons. One reason is that vehicles that have these safety features still get into auto accidents and when they do they are more expensive to repair. Another reason is that these safety technologies and systems still have issues functioning in all types of conditions, and some drivers turn off the systems to avoid alarms and false alerts, which can be common with some safety features. But the biggest reason why insurance rates are not expected to go down in the immediate future is the same reason insurance will likely always exist – human beings. Despite all these technologies and safety features, careless and reckless drivers will still cause accidents and injure other people on the road.

The auto accident lawyers at Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel, P.C., have decades of experience representing individuals who have been hurt as a result of careless drivers. We know that while new safety technology can help make us safer they cannot eliminate all auto accidents. We also understand that as people rely more on these safety features, they are more likely to fail to take all the precautions they should be taking as drivers, trusting that their technology will prevent any accidents.
